India is seeking to purchase a small lunar landers for the International Space Station, according to a report by Indian daily newspaper The Hindu.
According to a statement by the Indian Space research organisation, the landers are intended to be placed on the moon to study its surface, climate and soil composition.
The landers would also be used to explore the moon’s mineral resources.
India’s space agency has previously expressed interest in building a small moon colony for future human use.
However, no details have been given about the spacecraft or lander design.
The space agency’s Moon Express spacecraft is designed to send humans to the moon in 2021, with the cost estimated at about $1.4 billion.
The spacecraft’s design will depend on the availability of funding.
In a similar move, NASA is developing a spacecraft that could land on Mars in the 2030s.
